An intimate microwedding on a misty day
Planning weddings is what I do every day. Planning my sister's wedding was something entirely different.
When Samantha and Brandon got engaged, I knew exactly what I wanted for her. I wanted her to experience everything I hope my couples feel. I wanted her to be excited, to be present, and most importantly, to enjoy being the bride instead of worrying about the endless decisions that come with planning a wedding. She happily handed me the reins, and I loved every minute of creating a day that felt so completely like the two of them.
With just 50 of their closest family and friends gathered at New Leaf Farm in Waymart, Pennsylvania, every part of the day felt personal. Instead of a traditional reception layout, everyone gathered around one long table, sharing a meal, stories, and time together. It felt less like a wedding reception and more like one big family dinner. Of course, Mother Nature had her own plans. Rain moved the ceremony indoors, but the mist rolling over the mountains created the dreamiest backdrop for portraits. Sometimes the weather gives you something even better than what you planned.
There were so many emotional moments throughout the day, including my Aunt Sue and I gave her a bracelet that had belonged to our mom. It had been givien to her by our aunt as a thank you for being her maid of honor when she was married. Later that evening, Alyssa Golden sang a version of From This Moment On unlike anything I've ever heard. She rewrote the lyrics from my mom's perspective, opening with, "My girl, you made it. Look how far you've come, my baby." There wasn't a dry eye in the room. One by one, our family took turns dancing with Samantha, celebrating her while remembering the woman we all wished could have been there beside us.
I've planned hundreds of weddings, and every one has a story. This one will always mean a little more to me. Not because it was my sister's wedding, but because it reminded me exactly why these celebrations matter. They're about family, the people we've lost, the people still standing beside us, and the memories we'll carry long after the day is over.
